Yeah, Benjamin and Nina broke up after the surgery because he became depressed about it not working. She then ran away to Boston (Malibu Hotel) and he snapped out of it, still blind, and followed her. They reunited, he told her he loved her and then got his vision back. After that things were great except he felt that he had to do everything all at once and so ended up ignoring Nina in order to 'explore' the world. Lucas' dad had just died and Zoey had gone off to Washington for an internship for a few weeks so Nina and Lucas were becomming good friends being able to relate with one another.
One night at the Sand Bar where Aarons band had a gig, Benjamin and Nina had a quasi-fight and broke it off. So, no more Benjamin and Nina. After that Nina ends up walking with Lucas and they comfort each other and end up kissing. Then they kiss again later. That's all between them though - everything gets awkward after that.
Nina very obviously still loves Benjamin and there are several occassions such as when the gang go to dinner in Claire's dorm at MIT and Claire and Nina argue in which Claire blurts out her sisters obvious attempts to get Benjamin back. It's also clear however that Benjamin does still love Nina however nothing happens.
They never officially get back together however we know they both only love each other and in the last book there's the great passage where it says:
Paulo showed up and gave Claire a cup of punch.
"Hi, Nina," he said. "Some guy just offered me twenty bucks for your phone number."
"Not Julius," (School geek) Nina moaned. "He is here after all."
"Little guy?" Paulo asked. "Looks like he's probably good at math?"
"That's him," Nina said.
"Who? Benjamin asked, appearing at her elbow.
"This guy who wants Nina's phone number," Paulo said.
Benjamin's face darkened. "Why does he want your phone number?" he asked Nina.
"To ask her out, obviously," Claire said quickly. "He's incredibly handsome."
...the Passmores moved off to find seats, Benjamin glancing back worriedly.
"Thanks a lot for telling Benjamin that Julius is handsome," Nina said sarcastically. "That's probably the biggest lie ever told in a public building."
"What's wrong with you? Claire asked. "Benjamin looked like he wanted to challenge Julius to a dual."
I just love that bit. Sorry, a bit carried away! Any other Benjamin/Nina moments I can write out for you or parts of the books I can fill you in on? ;)
Hey, wow I took forever to get back to you here.
OK, what happens to the characters in the last book:
Since their house burned down and their parents were hospitalised, Zoey and Benjamin are back on the island to help run the resteraunt and because they can no longer afford tuition fees. Zoey is still ignoring Nina and being distant from Lucas. To help run the resteraunt, their cousin of sorts, Adam comes to the island to help out and Zoey ends up going on a date with him, they kiss and Lucas sees.
Lucas is working on helping to rebuild the Passmore house (out of his own goodness - Zoey manages to continue to piss me off by ignoring him despite this) and is also working to rebuild the Lighthouse with his boss, Guy. AND he's still running the fishing boat, poor guy. He still loves Zoey and would give anything to get her back.
Claire is at MIT with Paolo who is completely in love with her and who she'd also falling for. He's not intimidated by her and doesn't let her get away with anything; he gets her like no one had since Benjamin, and definitely even better than Benjamin. She goes to stay with his family over the holidays and ends up making a huge fool of herself by dropping a condom in front of his mother and getting drunk and throwing up, amongst other things. Normally she doesn't care what people think of her but she really wanted to make a good impression in front of Paolo's family because she cares about him, all of which she admits after she runs back home without telling anyone and he chases after her, kinda mad, to find out why. Happily ever after for Claire.
Aisha and Christopher have made their relationship work despite the meddling of her manipulative, insecure-girls-don't-deserve-to-be-in-relationships, Felicia. All good for them.
Benjamin is still being his regular, classy self and helping everyone. He and Nina are friends again and spending a lot of time together and she's reading to him whilst he rests his eyes as per the doctors instructions. He's still in love with Nina but doesn't say anything specific, even though hints are dropped on both sides and they're falling back into a routine like that of when they were first in a relationship.
Nina is still head over heels in love with Benjamin and furious at Zoey because she still holds her grudge even after everything important that has happened (Lara dying, the fire, no college, her parents in hospital etc.). She ends up having to take driving lessons alongside Zoey because they're both crap drivers and eventually Nina breaks down, apologises for everything and tell Zoey she misses her which Zoey says back. All good in friendship land.
After becomming friends with Nina again, Zoey finds it much easier to forgive Lucas and so they get back together. Yay for them.
The gang all get together again (except Jake) when Zoey has to give a dedication speech about a sunken ship and it's all very moving. Benjamin is jealous of the school geek who has the hots for Nina, Claire is nice for once and everyones aware of how lucky they are. Did I mention that Benjamin was jealous?! Basically it's meant to show that Nina and Benjamin are getting back together.
Oh, and the elder Passmore's are healthy again.
Hope that helps a bit :D

I'm a huge fan of the books, too. But apparently, not many people know about them. Yeah, I too am upset about the absence of Jake. And I agree about Benjamin. He is the most interesting character ever. I was just a little annoyed to see pictures of each character on the cover of the books (old edition). They look nothing like I imagined and it had ruined it for me. (Plus, the girl who's supposed to be Claire is no where near that pretty)
Sorry for the rant. I just felt good that finally there are others who like the series.
I know exactly what you mean! I love the books but the covers are definitely off putting. And they definitely do not look like I imagined them to...except possibly the girl they put as Nina...she's a lot like I pictured. But other than that. Besides the other covers are sooo much cooler.
Squeeeeeee, I thought I was the only one who loved these books! I'm big on Nina/Benjamin and Lucas/Zoey...even though Zoey pissed me off constantly. Nina is completely brilliant, I liked almost everything about her - including the sucking on unlit cigarettes thing.
Zoey successfully pissed me off a lot too. It's always the way that I don't particulary like the main character and Zoey's just another example of that. Nina/Benjamin in love and I do like Lucas/Zoey even though I actually think that Lucas is too good for Zoey in later books (after his dad's died and he's had to put off college).
Nina's unlit cigerettes are a perfect example of her that I love too. Nina just plain rocked to be honest ;)
I'm the same with the main characters mostly, although I enjoyed Zoey with Lucas more than most other 'main' pairings/characters from other books/TV shows (mainly in the first few books though). I kind of see Zoey/Nina like Liz/Maria on Roswell in a way.
I love your Kyle icon, now there's an underappreciated hottie!
